Epic Challenge: Making One-Fits-All EMR Solutions Work with Niche Medicine Needs

A recent Forbes article entitled “Epic Challenge: What The Emergence of an EMR Giant Means For the Future of Healthcare Innovation” makes sense for hospitals but niche medical facilities have very specific data needs that just aren’t compatible with the solutions of EMR giants – and some of the smaller software development players who seemed determined to fit an out-of-the-box solution onto custom requirements.

This wreaks havoc on the niche medical facilities that may not have the IT savvy to identify the areas of incompatibility between their data, processes and needs and these out-of-the-box solutions. An ill-fitting system can prove to be worse than no system at all.

The best alternative for those with unique data sets and processes and perhaps even unique treatment applications is most likely custom development – unless you’re lucky enough to locate a facility in your niche that has already created an application for your services niche. This is happening as more and more as doctors are applying their newly-acquired tech savvy to improving their business operations with custom developed applications and systems – such as EMR – and are willing to share what they’ve learned with colleagues.

There are custom application developers with expertise in medical records technology that are looking into how their custom expertise can help entire service niches.
